Should You Pay For Mogul?

Mogul is a service that investigates your royalty registrations. You connect every revenue source, distributors, PROs, CMOs, Publishing administrators, etc., and it pulls in all your releases and cross-references the sources. If you have a release that’s been distributed, but it’s not registered with your PRO, you get notified. It’s a cool tool, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth paying for. Here we examine the features and breaking point of when Mogul becomes something worth opening your wallet for.

Mogul Features Worth Paying For

Find and fix all your royalty gaps

If you want to collect 100% of the royalties that are available to be collected, here are the places your releases must be registered:

  • PRO (ASCAP, BMI, etc.)
  • MLC (US Only)
  • Publishing Administrator - Takes on the job of registering your works with PROs, CMOs, and the MLC
  • SoundExchange

Most artists stop at distribution. The major distributors request information that’s used for registrations like splits, songwriters, publishers, and in some cases, the IPI number. But they don’t register the releases anywhere. All they do is send them to stores. What that information does is make it easier for stores to identify who’s owed what when they send money to PROs and the MLC. For every unregistered track, rights holders lose about 20% of the revenue it generates.

If your process isn’t some combination of:

  • Distribution
  • PRO
  • Publishing Admin
  • SoundExchange

That 20% is being thrown away because after several years, it expires. You don’t have forever to claim it. Unclaimed royalties get split between top income earners. That’s right, your money goes to the Publishing companies representing artists like Taylor Swift. And it doesn’t stop at what you do - or don’t do, to be more accurate. It extends to what doesn’t get done by every artist you collaborate with. If their process is lax, you lose out on royalties for all collaborative releases too.

To reiterate, here’s the way Mogul works. You connect your distributor and distributors you’re receiving split pays from. It checks whether those releases are registered everywhere they need to be for you to get 100% of what you’re owed. If they’re not, you’re notified that you have collection gaps. Mogul Registration will fix the gaps for you.

It’s not essential, because you can go to your PRO or wherever you see your releases aren’t registered and register them. But, it can save you time. If you’re not the most astute in this area, the best decision could be to offload to Mogul which understands how things are handled. Nothing like finding out you didn’t register your songs correctly after the royalties expire.

Royalty Analytics Dashboard

Gives you a consolidated view of your royalties. In your distribution dashboard, you can see which songs are generating streaming revenue and digital download sales from stores like iTunes. What you can’t see is how much those songs are generating in performance and mechanical royalties. Imagine someone does a cover of your song and it sparks a trend of other artists doing covers of your song, the publishing and mechanicals could far exceed what’s being earned from the master recording. Your distributor’s Content ID program wouldn’t pick up on it, because it’s not an audio file with a fingerprint. The analytics dashboard would allow you to see your most valuable assets as far as royalty types and not just the best performing tracks for a single type.

Chat and Emails Support

When you’re dealing with something as sensitive as royalty registrations, this is critical. You need competent and responsive staff that understands what to do and knows how to deliver. And when it comes to customer support, the best ability, is availability.

Black Box Royalty Scan

Black Box royalties are royalties that are unallocated due to the rightful songwriters being unknown. This can happen when no one registers a release or aliases are used that are disconnected from government names. An artist might start out with one name and push out a bunch of releases then change his name and decide to get serious with his career. Registering with PROs after the name change could mean all the songs under the old name can’t be connected to him if he doesn’t register them with the PRO. Those songs will likely end up in a Black box and be put it a pipeline to be split between top income earners.

Mogul will check databases and save your money from being given to other rights holders who had nothing to do with the creation of your work.

Publishing and Neighboring Rights Registration

Here, you’re talking about offloading registrations to Mogul. If you connect your distributor, they’ll see when new releases are sent to DSPs and be able to check whether those releases are registered everywhere they should be and register them if they aren’t. You wouldn’t have to check if releases were registered and request registration or handle it yourself manually.

Dedicated Account Manager

This is something I view as more of an enterprise solution. A label or manager with a roster of artists would find value here. Also, an artist that prefers a hands on approach and having someone to chat with who can explain things, follow up on requests, and work more intimately with them would find value in this feature.

Monthly strategy calls

You have to know yourself. Are you the type of person to participate in this type of thing? It sounds good, but most creatives and even business people consult their team and work internally. This requires more than being open to the counsel of outsiders, you have to seek it out by scheduling and participating in calls. If you take advantage of it, it could absolutely be worth it.

Mogul ROI/ Breaking point
